What is a Social Enterprise ? A social enterprise is a revenue-generating business, often operated by a non-profit organization, with the twin goals of providing revenue for the organization while creating positive community change and/or employing people who are typically excluded from the mainstream economy.
Heartwood Community Gift and Thrift Shop
The Heartwood Community Gift and Thrift Shop is Heartwood’s new social enterprise. In partnership with OC Transpo, Heartwood House receives regular donations of unclaimed treasures from OC Transpo. Quality new and used unclaimed items, as well as donations from donors are sold every Thursday from 12:00 to 2:00 pm . The sale takes place in the main level Heartwood Hub , just beyond the front foyer reception desk. Pay by cash, debit or credit . Funds raised offset the operating costs of Heartwood House.
EVERYBODY WINS! Electronics recycling
Collects donations of computer equipment and other electronics. Items are inspected for usability, returned to service whenever possible or recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. Heartwood's own social enterprise!
ECOEQUITABLE
Offers sewing training and employment support for people in need, especially immigrant women. Contract sewing, public sewing courses and much more. EE is a Heartwood member group.
