JUNE 25, 2009 - Take it Back launches 2009 directory at Heartwood House!

The City of Ottawa's Take it Back Program was started in 1997 to encourage local businesses to take back many household items that they sell and to ensure that items are reused, recycled or disposed of properly.  Heartwood House has been a partner of Take it Back since 2006 in the operation of its Everybody Wins computer and television recycling program. Heartwood House in partnership with RD Long Computers is now an authorized collector of electronic waste on behalf of the Ontario Electronics Stewardship Program (OES), a non-profit industry organization that manages e-waste collection in Ontario.  Heartwood has collected over 200,000 pounds of electronics since 2006.  Our goal is to collect one million pounds of waste electronics by 2012.  Heartwood is thrilled to have been recognized by the City of Ottawa and OES for its forsight to take on the environmental responsibility of assisting with the safe disposal of electronic waste.

APRIL 12, 2008 - everybody wins!

everybody wins! holds its first special, on-site Saturday Drop-Off...

It was a rainy day, but that did not deter people from the Ottawa community from doing the right thing, when it came to getting rid of some electronics, back in April. The everybody wins! electronics recycling fundraising program is ongoing, and there is no doubt of its success. But, the 5,500lbs of electronics collected on the 12th, was a great Spring cleaning of used computer stuff. "Everybody truly does win!"

Computer Recycling Drop-Off Opportunity on Main St. in Stittsville
Sept. 15, 2007

One of the most exciting things happening in the everybody wins world is the interest and support that is being shown throughout the city for this recycling initiative. The most recent and significant evidence of this support is a timely opportunity put forth by Councillor Shad Qadri on the occasion of the Grand Opening of his ward office (Ward #6, Stittsville - Kanata West) . On Saturday morning, September 15, 2007, from 10am to 3pm, you will have the chance to come and drop off your old, surplus and end-of-life electronics, in donation support of Heartwood House.

Municipal Councillor Meetings - Raising awareness about ew!
June / July 2007

Getting the chance to sit and talk with a number of councillors in Ottawa was a thrill for Nicole over this past Summer, and it was a real boon to the program's efforts in the Ottawa community. Amongst others, Orleans Councillor Bob Monette and Stittsville-Kanata West Councillor Shad Qadri were interested and helpful in their responses. The City of Ottawa is becoming increasingly poised to respond to the province's growing e-waste strategies that are in the works. Heartwood House seeks to be at the forefront of these efforts as regulations and standards are set in place.

 The Joys of Municipal Support
June 15, 2007

Another wonderful show of support comes to us from the office of Councillor Peggy Feltmate (Ward #23, Kanata South) in her newsletter column dated June 15, 2007 . It contains all the information regarding the program, and a request for space to set up alternate drop-off points. Thank you, Councillor Feltmate!

everybody wins! participates in the Glebe Enviro Fair 2007
March 24, 2007

What a huge success the fair was! Welcomed and surrounded by an inspiring group of environmentally focused associations, Heartwood House was in very good company at this event. Originally anticipated as an opportunity to raise awareness and educate, it turned out to also be an chance to collect end-of-life electronics from the Ottawa community. Nicole Colbeck, Ray Long, Maureen Moloughney and Kae McColl were all on hand throughout the day to answer questions about the program and to collect items brought in for recycling.

CBC's (All In A Day) Adrian Harewood speaks with Nicole Colbeck
of Heartwood House's everybody wins! Computer Recycling Programme
March 23, 2007

Just a few days after Nicole joined the Heartwood team as Marketing Coordinator of the everybody wins! fundraising initiative, CBC's interest in the Glebe EnviroFair 2007 brought Heartwood House to their attention. A request for information about the fair and specifically about the issue of e-waste management and its place in our community, resulted in an interview with Adrian Harewood.

Discussing everything from how Heartwood's efforts with ew! represent financial support for its member groups, to the urgent and significant need for increased attention to the health and environmental issues surrounding safe e-waste management, the interview was one of this programme's most effective few minutes of public awareness raising. Nicole and the amazing front desk staff at Heartwood House continue to receive phone inquiries as a result of this interview. Thanks, CBC!

DECEMBER 8, 2006

The Everybody Wins Computer Recyling Program was officially launched by Ontario Minister of Community and Social Services Madeleine Meilleur and regional staff representive Jean-Paul Gagnon from the Ontario Trillium Foundation on December 8, 2006. Thanks to a $52,900 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant over two years the EW program now has the potential to grow into the main choice for the Ottawa community to recycle unwanted computer equipment.
